Here’s a snapshot of some of the work we did last week:

Calls of interest:

A hit-and-run was reported at around 1:15 am on July 6, after a grey Honda tried to pass an SUV on 7th Avenue, but side-swiped it, causing the SUV spin around and land on the sidewalk. The Honda fled, but was found crashed and abandoned near the intersection of Wren Street and Tyler Street a short-time later. Police searched the area for the driver, but he was not located. Just after 6 am, Mission RCMP were called to the Mission Sports Park, after a male was seen trying to break into a vehicle. Police attended and were confronted by the driver of the Honda from the night before. He was extremely agitated and waved a knife around before trying to run from police. Police caught up with the male and took him into custody without further incident.

On the evening of July 7, officers with the Mission RCMP Traffic Services unit, CP Railway Police, and volunteers from Mission’s Crime Prevention Office conducted an initiative focussed on impaired drivers. Their efforts that night led to the following:

• 3 drivers received 90-day driving prohibitions as a result of failed roadside alcohol screening tests
• 1 driver received a 3-day driving prohibition for a warn reading on a roadside alcohol screening test
• 1 driver received a 24-hour prohibition for drug impairment
• 2 drivers had drugs seized and tickets issued under the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act
• 2 drivers received tickets for not having a driver’s license
• 1 driver received a ticket for using their cell phone

On June 30, the owner of a tire shop in Delta reported that he believed he had been the victim of a fraud. A male had contacted the owner and arranged to purchase around $25,000 worth of tires. It was only after the tires were shipped that the owner realized it was likely a fraud. The owner was able to track the tires to a residence in Mission, and alerted police. Mission RCMP obtained a Search Warrant, and searched a residence on Cherry Avenue, where they located over 100 brand new tires in the garage, including the 44 tires shipped by the business in Delta. The investigation is ongoing.

Around 6 pm on July 9, a UHaul truck hit a telephone pole then crashed into a ditch on Dewdney Trunk Road just north of Keystone Avenue. One male from the UHaul remained on scene, while the other took off running. A witness followed the male, observed him discard what is believed to be illicit narcotics, and kept an eye on him until police arrived and arrested the male. The male had warrants out of Surrey and Abbotsford, and is now being investigated for drug-impaired driving. The UHaul was also reported to be stolen. Both the driver and passenger of the UHaul were taken to hospital with head injuries.

On the morning of July 9, a truck with a portable bathroom on it was observed to be backed up to a creek along Dewdney Trunk Road, dumping effluent into the creek. The driver of the truck drove off when he noticed he had been seen. The public is reminded of two things: Number 1 – Significant fines can be issued for dumping human waste into a stream or waterway. Number 2 - there is a free public RV dump station available on Mission Way, which can take care of Number 1 and Number 2.
