Original 2010 Olympic Torch to ignite support for Special Olympics BC

On Saturday June 7, an original 2010 Vancouver Olympics torch will reignite in Terrace BC to support Special Olympics BC.

We have been organizing the 5 km Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise funds for Special Olympics BC, said Cst Kelly Cates, however I was having a hard time finding a torch to use for the event.

After a little digging into Terrace’s history, Cst Cates was able to connect with Dave Jephson, Terrace’s former Deputy Fire Chief of 30 years. Jephson was one of the original torch bearers who was chosen to carry the Olympic torch into Terrace on February 1, 2010, lighting the Olympic cauldron in downtown Terrace. Jephson was excited to explain to Cst Cates that he still had that same Olympic torch and that he would be more than happy to lend it to this event. He was immediately enthusiastic about this Torch Run, knowing how important it is for the Special Olympic athletes and he is already planning to ensure that the athletes get a turn carrying the torch on this special day. Jephson said he just might even wear his original Torch relay suit.

Cst Cates is encouraging the community to participate in this event by registering online at https://letr.crowdchange.ca/111985/team/54050 and joining the Terrace Team.

Participants will begin at the RCMP detachment on Eby Street in Terrace at 11:00 am for the opening ceremonies, followed by the 5 km run/walk which will take place on the Millennium Trail, recently renamed the Xpilaxha Trail. The event will finish with a hot dog barbeque where top fundraisers will receive prizes, and other door prizes will be awarded.

Cst Cates is still inviting business owners to get involved and says they can reach her by calling the Terrace RCMP detachment. I am blown away by the support of this community and the willingness of business owners to get involved, says Cst Cates, it’s such a real reminder of what a great community Terrace is.
