File # Public Service Announcement
As the holiday season is in full swing, the Coquitlam RCMP is stepping up its efforts to combat shoplifting in high-theft areas. With the busy shopping month of December upon us, officers will be conducting increased proactive patrols to ensure a safe and secure shopping environment for all.
"December is a time for celebration, but unfortunately, it also brings an uptick in retail theft including vehicle break ins as criminals take advantage of the holiday rush," said Sergeant Karrie Ellis of the Coquitlam RCMP. "Our officers are committed to keeping both shoppers and store owners safe. We are not only ramping up our presence in high-theft areas but also using a range of innovative techniques to deter crime."
The operation, dubbed "The Grinch Watch," will target retail hotspots and high-risk locations, where shoplifting incidents are typically higher during the festive season. Officers and volunteers will be visible and working closely with local businesses to identify and address criminal activity.

"We want the holiday season to be joyful for everyone," added Sergeant Karrie Ellis, "Our message is clear: If you're thinking about stealing, think again. We’ll be watching."
The initiative will also include community outreach efforts, reminding both shoppers and store employees about the importance of vigilance and reporting suspicious behavior to police. The Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency line is 604-945-1550 or 911 in the case of an emergency.
With increased surveillance, smart technology, and heightened officer presence, the goal is to reduce theft and prevent crime, ensuring that the only thing residents have to worry about this December is picking the perfect gift. Have a safe and happy holiday season,
The Coquitlam RCMP
