File # 1003 2025-1924

Astute motorists are noticing that oversized highway signs are now warning drivers that BC Highway Patrol is on the prowl for unsafe driving.

A less astute motorist has lost his vehicle after speeding under one of those signs, while allegedly on his cell phone, in front of BC Highway Patrol.

On June 28, 2025, at 4:30 p.m., a westbound white Mercedes sedan was stopped on Highway #1 in Surrey, BC. A BC Highway Patrol officer got a speed reading of 134 km/h in a 100 zone while he was parked under a sign saying BC Hwy Patrol Ahead. Drive Safe.

It’s alleged that the 19-year-old Coquitlam man who was driving didn’t see the warning sign, or the police officer, because he was also using his cell phone while speeding, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.

Due to the totality of circumstances, including a driving prohibition that was already in effect, the driver is being issued the following:

Sometimes life gives you a sign, says Corporal McLaughlin. Make an effort to slow down and enjoy the drive. You might avoid getting ticketed and towed.
