West Shore RCMP investigating an influx of auto theft on the West Shore

West Shore RCMP has experienced a higher than average number of stolen vehicles reported to police in the first 2 months of 2025.

West Shore RCMP has received 22 reports of vehicle theft from January 1, 2025, to February 25, 2025, as compared to 8 reports of vehicle theft for the same time period last year. Nine out of the twenty two vehicles reported stolen in 2025 are pick-up trucks.

While police are working hard to investigate these vehicle thefts, there are protective measures vehicle owners can take to mitigate the chances of their vehicles being stolen. Here are some tips on how to keep your vehicle safe from theft:

• If you have an older model vehicle manufactured prior to 2007, consider using anti-theft device such as a steering wheel lock and/or electronic engine immobilizer;
• Always keep track of your keys, never leave them unguarded. Do not leave spare keys in your vehicle;
• Park your vehicle in secure well-lit areas;
• Make sure the garage door or gate is closed behind you, ensuring a thief has not snuck into your personal or parking garage area;
• Don’t leave your garage door opener in your vehicle;
• Keep valuables out of sight and take them inside with you when your vehicle is parked.
