Residential disturbance leads to police foot chase, arrest, new charges

File # 2024-5266

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 10:15 a.m., frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officers responded to a 28-year-old Trail man causing a disturbance at a residence in the 1900 block of Seventh Avenue, in Trail, BC.

Officers attended and located the man at the residence, and discovered he had outstanding unendorsed warrants for his arrest. When an officer attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly swung his fist at the officer. The officer managed to dodge the punch and deploy a conduct energy weapon. The officer’s deployment was unsuccessful and the man fled the scene.

The officers conducted extensive patrols to locate the man and were assisted by RCMP Police Dog Services. The officers located the man in the 1000 block of Victoria Street and arrested him without further incident.

The officers took the man into custody and lodged him in the cellblock at the Trail Detachment. He will remain in custody after appearing before a Judge in a bail hearing.

Matthew Leavitt, age 28, has been charged with:

We appreciate the support of our new Police Dog Service handler, and look forward to continue to keep our communities safe with his assistance, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Winter conditions contribute to motor vehicle incident

File # 2024-5270

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 6:50 p.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer responded to motor vehicle incident on Highway 3B, near Rossland, BC.

The occupants were travelling eastbound toward Warfield when their vehicle slipped off the road due to snowy conditions. Neither person was injured. Officers assisted the couple with recovering their vehicle and making it home safely.

This is a good reminder to make sure you are prepared for winter driving conditions. Plow trucks are working on our roads but please make sure you also have good winter tires and an emergency roadside kit as well. Let someone know if you are travelling over a Kootenay highway pass in inclement weather, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Let’s get the fork(lift) out of here!

File 2024-5272/5273

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 8:47 p.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer responded to a suspect attempting to commandeer a forklift from a location on Red Mountain Road, near Rossland, BC. The officer attended the scene and located the fork lift abandoned on the road. The officer secured the forklift and arranged for it to be returned to it original location.

A second officer was conducting a patrol nearby on Telemark Road when he encountered a vehicle stuck in the snowbank. This officer located a 36-year-old Rossland man who was driving the vehicle prior to the crash. The man appeared to be uninjured at the time of the incident. The officer made observations that led him to believe the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle may be impaired by alcohol. A demand was read to the man who provided a sample of breath roadside that resulted in a fail.

The 36-year-old Rossland man was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under Section 215 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act. His vehicle was impounded for up to 30 days.

The officers suspected there was a connection between the 36-year-old Rossland man and the forklift being moved.

The officers recovering the forklift was an uplifting experience for them. They definitely help raised the bar with their investigation, says Sgt. Wicentowich

Shoplifting

File # 2024-5280

On Monday, November 18, 2024, a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was patrolling when he spotted a 41-year-old Trail woman with an outstanding unendorsed warrant walking in the 700 block of Victoria Street, in Trail, BC.

The woman entered a business and exited a short time later. The officer arrested her as she walked by his marked police cruiser. The officer located three chocolate bars that she had allegedly stolen inside the store.

The officer transported and lodged the woman into the cellblock at the Trail Detachment. She appeared before a judge and was released on conditions.

Crystal Dawn Schubert has been charged with one count of Theft under $5000 contrary to Section 334(b) of the Criminal Code. She will make her next appearance on December 3, 2024, in Provincial Court, in Rossland, BC.

Bad timing to give yourself a five fingered discount, says Sgt. Wicentowich.
