Ladysmith RCMP officers and staff are out on the highway to promote road safety awareness and ensure safe driving speeds this summer.
Ladysmith RCMP detachment is working on a pilot project this summer to bring speed reader boards back to the roads in Ladysmith. Staff have received training from ICBC and are out in the community to let drivers know how fast they are going. As drivers travel through the Ladysmith RCMP community, the speed limit on the Trans Canada Highway changes several times from 90 km/hr, to 80 km/hr and lowers to 70 km/hr when traveling through the Town of Ladysmith.
We want to educate drivers first, says Ladysmith Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Trevor Busch, the speed reader boards are an effective tool to bring awareness to the issue so drivers can correct their speed first. Our officers will also be out in the community conducting traffic enforcement when required.

Two drivers have recently been ticketed for excessive speeding on the Trans Canada Highway near Ladysmith.On July 1, 2025, a driver was identified travelling 141 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone, resulting in fines and a vehicle impound for excessive speeding.On July 8, 2025, a Ford Mustang driven by a new driver was found speeding at 137 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone. The young driver was served with fines and received a vehicle impound for excessive speeding as well as fines for other new drivers license infractions.

Speeding remains one of the highest contributing causes of serious vehicle collisions in British Columbia. The Ladysmith RCMP would like to remind drivers to obey the speed limits, and plan extra time to reach your destination safely so that all drivers can enjoy safe roads this summer.
