The snow and ice are melting, roads are clearing, and we’re all feeling the urge to stretch our legs; but 14 drivers are walking instead of driving after making poor choices to drive too fast in Fort St. John.

Speed, along with distracted driving and impaired driving, are the top three contributing factors to fatal collisions in this province, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. You never know when BC Highway Patrol will launch a concentrated effort at excessive speeders, but you can bet that you’ll lose the privilege of driving if you don’t slow down.

In the first week of March, BC Highway Patrol (Fort St. John) stopped and impounded 14 vehicles for speeds in excess of 40 km/h over the limit:

All of the drivers are also responsible for the cost of the tow, the cost of the seven-day impound, and the cost of ICBC premium points.

Our job is to help make driving safer for everybody, says Corporal McLaughlin, And that’s what we aim to do by letting drivers know all the consequences of speeding.
