Nanaimo man charged with six firearm offences

51-year-old James Newstead of Nanaimo charged with six firearm offences, including pointing a firearm.

On the evening of May 2, 2025, a witness reported that a male, later identified as James Newstead, pointed a gun at him and then ran away.

Newstead was arrested, without incident, a short time later, near the intersection of 5th Street and Princess Avenue with a loaded handgun.

On May 5, 2025, the BC Prosecution Services approved seven charges against James Newstead, including:

Weapons seized during search

On May 5, 2025 the members of the Nanaimo RCMP Special Investigations Unit SITE conducted a search of Newstead’s residence.

The investigators seized multiple firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammo and a pipe bomb.

The pipe bomb was successful disposed of by the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit.

Newstead remains in custody. His next court date is May 13, 2025.
