Nanaimo man charged with six firearm offences

51-year-old James Newstead of Nanaimo charged with six firearm offences, including pointing a firearm.

On the evening of May 2, 2025, a witness reported that a male, later identified as James Newstead, pointed a gun at him and then ran away.

Newstead was arrested, without incident, a short time later, near the intersection of 5th Street and Princess Avenue with a loaded handgun.

On May 5, 2025, the BC Prosecution Services approved seven charges against James Newstead, including:

Pointing a firearm;
Possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace;
Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, 45 caliber handgun without a license to possess that weapon.
