Beware of Google play gift card scams

On May 21, 2024, the Terrace RCMP responded to a report of a scam where the victims paid nearly $2000 worth in Google Play and Apple gift cards. The scammer in this instance initially posed as a UPS employee stating that there was a package to be delivered, $36,000 in value, which required a $1000 deposit.

The scammer later posed as a BC Corrections officer and eventually as an RCMP officer to further intimidate and convince the victims. All communications took place between the scammer and the victim through a text messaging platform.

RCMP would like to remind the public of the following things to avoid being scammed:

• Ask yourself, is it too good to be true?
• Is the scammer telling you you’re a winner but you still have to pay something?
• Are they asking for private information?
• Does it involve cash?
• Do they pose as a best friend?
• Are they urging you to act immediately?

Here’s what you can do if you believe you may be the victim of a scam:

• Contact your local police force and file a report.
• Contact your financial institution and credit card company.
• Always report fraud scams. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, toll free at 1-888-495-8501.
• Contact the two national credit bureaus.  (Equifax Canada 1-800-465-7166; Trans Union Canada 1-877-525-3823)
• Consider contacting the Better Business Bureau to make a report. 1-888-803-1222
