File # 2023-39917
A report of youth being assaulted with a knife lead to a large police presence, and the allegation later being proved false. The incident was reported at approximately 3:30 PM on Thursday November 16 2023 near MacDonald’s restaurant on Bowen Road
The alleged victim, a 12-year-old youth, reported that he had been assaulted with a knife, and provided a description of the suspect. Police responded within minutes and detained three individuals including a man who the youth had identified. After reviewing the store video surveillance and speaking with the youth, police determined the assault did not occur and that the youth had fabricated the entire incident.
Two of the men detained were released without charge. The third individual, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on outstanding warrants from Comox and Oceanside. He was later released on an Appearance Notice and issued with a court date of November 21, 2023 in Nanaimo Provincial Court.
The youth was turned over to the care of his parents. Investigators assigned to our School Liaison Unit will be following up with the youth and his parents to ensure the young man understands the gravity of his actions, and to ensure it does not happen again, said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
