With decreasing daylight, the likelihood of pedestrian versus motor vehicle collisions increase. Crosswalk collisions also become more frequent. The reality is that the overwhelming majority of these incidents are preventable if pedestrians and motorists look out for each other, said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Pedestrians always have the right of way when entering a crosswalk or intersection. However, if an approaching vehicle does not appear to be slowing, the pedestrian risks serious injury or worse if they enter the crosswalk.
