On April 14, 2025, at 3:30 p.m., BC Highway Patrol officers were conducting a road check near Yale, BC and stopped a lone driver. While speaking to the driver, the officer noted that the minivan was suspiciously full of ten large storage containers and there was also an overpowering odour of green cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

This case illustrates how routine traffic enforcement can also uncover other serious violations, says Inspector Lori Orstad with BC Highway Patrol. In this instance, officers observed circumstances that required further investigation. Under the Cannabis Regulations, a federal licence is required to possess, store, or transport large quantities of cannabis. As the driver could not produce such a licence, he was arrested.

The man who was arrested is a resident of Surrey who is known to police for similar offences. His name will not be released until formal charges are laid. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
