On November 28, a Mission RCMP officer was monitoring traffic coming off the Mission Bridge, when a vehicle with one headlight out caught his attention. The officer then followed the vehicle into a nearby mall parking lot, where it drove erratically and pulled into the drive-through of a fast-food doughnut establishment, where the vehicle stopped an unusually long distance away from the order screen. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and determined the driver was showing clear signs of impairment by liquor. The 20-year-old driver – who had a Novice driver’s license – failed two roadside screening tests, and received a 90-day driving prohibition, as well as a 30-day vehicle impound.
Just after midnight on December 3, a passerby reported a possible impaired collision at the intersection of Farms Road and Sward Road in Hatzic. A grey pickup had driven into the ditch, then the driver climbed out and was observed exhibiting signs of impairment. An officer spoke with the driver, who admitted he had been drinking, said he had missed his turn, and described trying to do a doughnut to get his truck turned back around, but lost control and put his truck into the ditch. The 74-year-old male driver was also issued a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day impound.
Mission RCMP took numerous other impaired drivers off the roads that week as well, including during a national impaired-driving enforcement initiative on Saturday December 2. Some of the other impaired drivers included a 45 year-old that tried to avoid an impaired-driving road check but was caught nonetheless, a 24 year-old that was caught at that same road check, an 18-year-old Novice driver that had been drinking contrary to his license restrictions, and a 58-year-old that was smoking marihuana in his car in close proximity to families enjoying the Christmas parade.
We have just started the holiday impaired driving enforcement campaign, says Corporal Harrison Mohr with Mission RCMP. Drivers from Silverdale to Lake Errock can expect to see Mission RCMP out conducting extra patrols and road checks to help everyone stay safe over the holidays. Instead of making a New Year resolution, make a resolution right now not to drink and drive, and please stick with it. Someone’s life may depend on it.
