Driver sentenced to jail after collision that killed a 7-year-old child

Update 2024-11-07: On October 24, 2024, 49- year-old Matthew Darlington entered a guilty plea to operating a conveyance with methamphetamine in his blood causing death, contrary to section 320.14(1)(c) and 320.14(3) of the Criminal Code. On November 5, 2024, he was sentenced to 6 years in jail, 35- year driving prohibition, and was ordered to provide a sample of his DNA.

Background:

On September 7, 2021 at approximately 2:00 a.m. The Sooke RCMP received reports of a single vehicle collision. Upon arrival the Sooke RCMP, Sooke Fire Department and BC Ambulance located the scene and found multiple persons with serious life threatening injuries. Police later confirmed that the collision in the 5800 Block of Sooke Road claimed the life of a 7-year-old child and sent four other people to hospital.

Through investigation, it has been determined that the black Chevrolet Cavalier was travelling westbound on Sooke Road, struck a concrete curb near a bus stop before striking a tree.

The Vancouver Island RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) was called in to assist with this investigation.
