The Campbell River RCMP are reminding motorists that school is back in session on September 3rd, 2024.
In it's most basic terms, that means that speed limits in marked school zones apply from 8am until 5pm, Monday through Friday. It also means a heavy increase of school busses on the roadways in the community with a reminder that drivers are not to pass those busses when their red lights are flashing and their stop sign is engaged.
Our friends with the local Citizens on Patrol will be out in force at multiple locations reminding people of speed limits in school zones, explained Cst. Maury Tyre. In addition, our officers will be conducting regular patrols in school zones looking for motorists who are putting children's lives at risk by speeding and using electronic devices while driving.
Speeds in school zones are set low to ensure that if a child was accidentally struck by a vehicle that they would likely survive. Even a marginal increase of 5km/hr over the speed limit could mean that a pedestrian would not survive the encounter with the vehicle.
So keep your eyes on the road and your speed at or under 30km/hr in posted school zones, the kids will thank you.
