Update #8 on police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed

B.C., Lake Cowichan

2021-05-26 13:41 PDT

Yesterday, on May 25, 2021, police enforcement of the BC Supreme Court injunction order was initially scheduled to occur solely at the encampment near Port Renfrew where officers have been primarily focussing their efforts for the past several days.

Just before 8 a.m. the RCMP were made aware of a large group of people who gathered at the check point on the McClure Forest Service Road, and blocked traffic in both directions, contrary to the court-ordered injunction. Some officers were redeployed from the Port Renfrew area to the check point on the McClure Forest Service Road. The court-ordered injunction was read to the group of individuals who were blocking the roadway and were provided an opportunity to leave or face arrest. As of last night, approximately 55 individuals were arrested for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court), 9 of whom were repeat arrests from previous days. More arrests are pending, as individuals continue their blockade today of the roadway on McClure Forest Service Road.

Attempts are being made to process all arrested individuals at the Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment.

An additional 4 persons have been included in the arrest total from Saturday, May 22, 2021 (see news release: 2021-05-22). They were arrested for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court), along with a group of individuals who were blocking the McClure Forest Service Road.

Since enforcement began, the RCMP have now arrested an approximate of 112 individuals; 9 of whom were previously arrested. This total and breakdown of how many were arrested for breaching the injunction and for obstruction will be verified once all individuals who are blocking the forestry road are arrested and processed.

All news releases on the Fairy Creek Watershed police enforcement issued to date can be found on the Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment website.
