Fatal collision on Highway 101

On February 24, 2024, at approximately 5:00 am, BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) advised Powell River RCMP of a single vehicle collision on Highway 101 just north of Lang Bay Road. Police attended and observed a pick-up truck that was crushed against a telephone pole.

Initial evidence gathered at scene suggested that the vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 101 and had veered off the road and struck the telephone pole.

There were three occupants inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. Unfortunately, the driver was pronounced deceased on scene. The other two passengers were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The collision remains under investigation, including the circumstances prior to the crash. Said Cst. Paula Perry, spokesperson for Powell River RCMP.

Wolf attack on Eagle Crossing trail

On February 22, 2024, Powell River RCMP responded to a report that a hiker had gone into the Eagle Crossing trail with two dogs and approximately thirty minutes later, the dog had returned with blood on it, and there was no sign of the hiker.

The hiker was eventually found, and she reported to police that she had hiked to Eagle River bridge and on the way back through the trail, saw a pack of wolves approaching. The wolves got close to the hiker and the two dogs charged at the wolves to keep them away.

The hiker made it back to safety, but the hiker stated that "the wolves stalked her the entire way back to Hwy 101 and she had to scream and wave a large stick at them multiple times during the walk back."

The hiker and both dogs are OK.

The Powell River RCMP would like to advise the public that this was a second and separate incident from the wolf attack on Wilde Rd. that occurred earlier the same day.
Powell River RCMP are warning the public to continue to exercise extreme caution in the area and when out on hiking trails.
