Week in review July 20 to July 26, 2024

The Terrace RCMP responded to approximately 214 calls between July 20 and July 26, 2024. Below are some highlights of calls attended:

On the afternoon of July 20, 2024, Terrace RCMP were conducting foot patrols in the 4500 block of Queensway Drive and located a man and woman at an encampment. The pair were observed to be in possession of drug paraphernalia which was in non-compliance with the class exemption to possess small amounts of certain illegal substances. During the interaction, the man was found to be in breach of several court orders with conditions that require him to reside at a specific address as well as a condition to not possess certain tools. The man was found in possession of these tools. He was arrested for 5 counts of breach and RCMP held him in custody to appear before a judge. A remand warrant was issued to hold the man in custody. On July 24, he was found guilty on one count of breach of probation, and released after 5 days of jail time served. (2024-6205)

Failure to attend court: On July 23, 2024, 2 women and 4 men failed to attend court in relation to separate matters. New charges were not approved for failing to appear, however, warrants were issued for the arrest of each person. RCMP will make efforts to locate and arrest on these warrants.

Beware of Frauds and Scams – On July 23, 2024, Terrace RCMP received a report of a scam which cost a man approximately $8,000. The scam started with a text message asking if the man would like to work remotely. The man agreed and was later contacted on WhatsApp. He was further directed to set up a Crypto Wallet on the Crypto app and to transfer money from his own bank account to his new Crypto Wallet. The man has not yet received any payments or reimbursements. RCMP are investigating the matter. (2024-6307) Click here to learn more about Frauds and scams. While on routine patrol, July 23, 2024, a vehicle was observed on Highway 16 east to be driving under the speed limit and struggling to stay between the lines. The officer conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle which was occupied by only the female driver. The officer attempted six times to obtain a breath sample from the woman however she was uncooperative in providing a sample. During this process she was warned more than once that failure or refusing to provide a sample carries the same penalty as impaired driving. The woman was issued an immediate roadside prohibition, and her vehicle was impounded. (2024-6309)

On July 23, 2024, Terrace RCMP observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed over the Dudley Main Bridge which was captured on radar at a rate of 108 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone. The man driving the vehicle advised he was late for work as the reason for his speed. Nonetheless, the man was given a speeding ticket and was issued a vehicle impound. (2024-6316)

While patrolling Highway 16 between Terrace and Usk, Terrace RCMP observed a vehicle travelling at a speed of 136 km/hour in a 90 km/hour zone, as captured by radar equipment. A traffic stop was initiated and the man driving the vehicle was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle was impounded for one week. (2024-6360). As per Section 148(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act, A person who drives a motor vehicle on a highway at a speed greater than 40 km/h over the applicable speed limit… is subject to a fine amount of $320 and vehicle impoundment.

Concealed Imitation Firearm – On the morning of July 25, 2024, a Terrace RCMP officer observed a vehicle depart from a residence. While the vehicle was still in sight, the officer noted behavior consistent with possible impairment. A traffic stop was conducted with the vehicle to ensure sobriety of the driver. While the female driver was found to be sober, the male passenger was exhibiting behavior which caused concern for officer safety. The man was detained during the traffic stop and a search was conducted for officer safety. A shape of a firearm was located inside the man’s clothing and upon seizing it, was identified as a replica firearm, having the appearance of a real firearm. The man was provided his charter rights for possession of a concealed weapon and released with conditions not to possess weapons. The RCMP will be submitting the results of the investigation to BC Prosecution Services for consideration of charge approval. (2024-6384)

Impaired Operation – July 25, 2024, RCMP received a report of an impaired woman who had left a residence and was now driving in Terrace. Terrace RCMP located the woman driving the described vehicle and conducted a traffic stop with her, also noting a strong odor of liquor. One breath sample taken roadside resulted in a fail, after which the woman became uncooperative and began walking away from police. She was arrested for impaired operation and taken back to the Terrace Detachment where the impaired investigation continued. The vehicle was impounded and she was later released with a Driving Prohibition and a court date for a charge of Operation while impaired and drive while prohibited. (2024-6398)
