BCHP Vancouver Island & BCHP’s Integrated Impaired Driving Unit (IIDU) partner with Lake Cowichan RCMP for road safety enforcement over long-weekend

Island District, Lake Cowichan, BC Highway Patrol

2023-08-10 06:56 PDT

Over the BC Day long weekend, multiple units from BC Highway Patrol Vancouver Island and BCHP’s Integrated Impaired Driving Unit (IIDU) partnered with Lake Cowichan RCMP to target road safety issues created by an influx of traffic in the Lake Cowichan area from the SunFest Music Festival, long weekend camping and drivers using the alternate route to bypass the Highway 4 road closures.

During the weekend, a total of 26 impaired drivers and 3 prohibited drivers were removed from local roadways. In addition, a total of 226 violation tickets were issued for a variety of Motor Vehicle Act offences.

Staff Sergeant Adam Tallboy, Acting OIC of BCHP Vancouver Island stated, While 26 impaired drivers are a concerning number, given the large number of drivers who were screened for impairment by BCHP and Lake Cowichan officers it shows that the majority of drivers are making safe choices. I especially want to thank all those designated drivers who assisted getting their friends and family home safely.
