Update #95 on police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed

Lake Cowichan

2021-09-09 21:17 PDT

Police enforcement of the BC Supreme Court injunction order in the Fairy Creek Watershed area continued today, on September 9, 2021, with ongoing efforts to keep the Granite Mainline Forest Service Road and other corridors free from any obstructions, devices or protester camps.

This morning a group of individuals gathered, locked arms, sat down and actively blocked access to the forest service road, refusing to move. Over the course of 4 to 5 hours RCMP worked to arrest 71 individuals for obstruction with the majority of the arrestees transported from the injunction area and released without charges. 13 individuals were arrested for breaching the injunction (contempt of court) and released in Port Renfrew. The arrest of the contemnors proceeded without any major incident or reports of injuries.

During the day, a protester indicated they were in medical distress (seizures) and in need of emergency medical assistance. On site Medic assessed the individual and BC Ambulance was dispatched to the area. The individual was transported to Port Renfrew where they walked away from the paramedics, refusing to give their name.

During enforcement patrols, there were no individuals located in locking devices or any obstructions encountered.

Since enforcement began, the RCMP have arrested 962 individuals; 72 of whom were previously arrested with a combined total of 175 times. Of the total arrested, 741 were for breaching the injunction (contempt of court), 188 were for obstruction, 16 were for mischief, 6 were for breaching their release conditions, 6 were for assaulting a police officer, 2 were for failing to comply with a court order, 1 for counselling to resist arrest, 1 for causing a disturbance, and 1 Immigration Act.
