Files of note
Fraud by phone
On June 27, at approximately 2:29 p.m., police received a report of a fraud that took place a few days earlier. A scammer contacted the elderly victim by phone, reporting that they were from Telus, and trying to get them to upgrade their internet. The scammer was given credit card information by the victim, and they immediately conducted 2 transactions on the credit card, one for $300 and one for $200.
Police have received a number of these complaints recently and would like to remind the public to not provide confidential personal or financial information over the phone and to hang up the phone immediately if you believe a scammer is calling you.
Prohibited Driver
On June 27, at approximately 10:46 p.m., police were making patrols on Hwy 101 when they observed a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was stopped and police spoke to the driver. Records checks indicated the driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old female from Powell River, was currently prohibited from driving. The driver was arrested and released on scene to attend court at a later date. The vehicle was then impounded under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act and the driver was given a ride to her residence.
Impaired Driving
On June 29 at approximately 1:38 a.m., police stopped a vehicle on Joyce Avenue near Manson Avenue after it was observed speeding. Police spoke to the driver, a 26-year-old male from Powell River. The driver showed signs of impairment and as a result a breath sample was obtained on an approved screening device. The sample registered a fail, and as a result the driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
