Collision prompts summer driving safety reminder from Smithers RCMP

B.C., Smithers

2025-07-10 20:37 PDT

File # 2025-2340

On July 8, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Smithers RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at Lunan Road and Old Babine Lake Road.

A pickup truck was travelling along Old Babine Lake Road toward Highway 16 when it struck the rear of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that had stopped on the roadway for an animal. The impact caused the SUV to veer into the ditch, while the pickup truck remained on the roadway.

Following an investigation, the driver of the truck was issued the following under the BC Motor Vehicle Act:

We are reminding the public to stay alert, drive defensively, and maintain a safe following distance. Driving is a complex task that requires your complete attention. With wildlife and other unexpected hazards common on our roads, staying focused and giving yourself time to react is critical.

As summer is here, we want to take this opportunity to share that speed, impaired driving, and distracted driving continue to be the top three causes of death on our roads.

We want everyone to enjoy their summer months and get to their destinations safely.
