Trick or treating is fun, but safety should be number 1! The UFVRD RCMP have all the safety tips and advice you need to have a safe and happy howl-oween!

Whether you are trick or treating or attending a spooky gathering with friends, keep these safety tips in mind before heading out this Halloween.

Children

• Do not go trick or treating alone. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Be seen - wear bright costumes and carry a flashlight, glow stick or have reflective tape on your costume.
• Wear a mask with eye holes large enough to allow you to see your surroundings – consider make-up.

Older kids and teenagers:

• Use a buddy system and do not go out alone.
• Do not approach houses that have lights off.
• Cross the street at marked crosswalks and intersections.
• Let your parents know where you are going and when you will be home.

Parents and guardians

• If your child is trick-or-treating without an adult, make sure they have a buddy to go with and discuss a defined route and a curfew. When kids have their route planned ahead of time, it can help avoid them getting lost.
• Talk with your kids about traffic safety before leaving the house.
• Advise your kids to bring candy home to be inspected before eating it. Parents should always go through treats to ensure there are no hazards. Throw away any open packages or homemade treats.

Motorists

• Halloween means many children on the streets. Drivers should use extra caution and drive slowly in residential areas.
• Always enter and exit driveways slowly and take extra care at intersections.

Your haunted house

We get it; it is all about the decorations when transforming homes into eerie scenes. However, keep safety in mind for all the trick-or-treaters visiting your home. Be sure to keep the path leading to your door free of obstacles, especially for those with masks and limited vision.

Avoid using open flames in your displays. Consider using LED candles or glow sticks this year to light up your Jack-O-Lanterns.

Halloween party-goers

• Plan your ride home. Don’t drink and drive. If you are planning to drink, drink responsibly.
• Fake weapons in your costume? Choose fakes that look fake but always remember, not everyone can tell the difference.
