Coquitlam RCMP issue 4,163 violation tickets within High Accident Zone Enforcement (HAZE) areas throughout 2023. Coquitlam RCMP issued the most violation tickets along the Maryhill Bypass with 1666 tickets, followed by 1005 at Lougheed Highway and Pinetree, next with 879 along Como Lake Avenue and lastly at Lougheed Highway and Shaughnessy with 613 violation tickets.
Throughout 2023, Police at Coquitlam Detachment used High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) to target unlawful driving behaviour within designated HAZE areas. Designated HAZE areas are identified using ICBC statistical information, that keeps track of the intersections and roadways with the highest rate of casualty crashes within the BC Lower Mainland.

Our goal with Traffic enforcement is to reduce harm while changing unlawful behaviour to increase road safety, said Staff Sergeant Mark McCutcheon, Coquitlam RCMP’s Traffic Services Commander. Often times, we find that public perception of the dangers or lack of dangers on a roadway, do not match the collision statistics for that location. We hope that showing the public how areas are identified for police enforcement, providing our traffic enforcement calendar and sharing violation ticket statistics per location will help people understand why certain areas see higher traffic enforcement than others.

The Mary Hill Bypass area in Port Coquitlam continues to see the highest ticket numbers of 113 in September and 242 in October. At Lougheed highway at Shaughnessy street where distracted driving is being enforced, there was 67 violation tickets issued in September and only 16 in October. We are pleased to see that drivers are getting the message and are leaving their phone alone said Staff Sergeant Mark McCutcheon.

In Coquitlam, Como Lake and Fowler received 64 violation tickets in September and 127 in October in addition to 114 tickets in September and 71 tickets for October at Lougheed and Pinetree.
In addition to police traffic enforcement, Coquitlam RCMP often utilizes Speed Watch Volunteers and speed radar detectors to assess identified problem areas. These programs can be quickly deployed to an area should an immediate concern be identified by the community or through a series of collisions.
