Car accident causes power outage
Just before midnight on November 7, Malaspina Fire Department requested assistance with a single vehicle accident on Highway 101 at Black Point Rd. Powell River RCMP attended and observed a vehicle in the ditch with significant damage. The vehicle had hit and knocked over a BC Hydro pole which had fallen into the tree line, igniting a small fire. No one was found inside the vehicle or in the immediate area and there was no indication that anyone had been injured. The accident caused a power outage south of town. BC Hydro responded and was able to restore power at 3:30 p.m. the following day. The investigation is ongoing.
Hunting on Texada Island results in violation ticket
On the afternoon of November 4th, Texada Island RCMP received a report that there was a woman hunting in a closed area in Pocohontas Bay on Texada Island. The caller informed the woman that she was not allowed to hunt so close to the road and the woman left. Police consulted with the local Conservation Officer who confirmed that hunters must be 25 metres off the road and pointing in a direction away from the road at all times. The following morning, the female hunter phoned Texada Island RCMP and admitted that she was hunting approximately 2 metres off the road. The hunter was issued a violation ticket, contrary to the Wildlife Act, which carries a fine of $345.00.
