File # 2025-2769
Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a driver of a pickup who fled from police and rammed several police vehicles. The incident occurred just before 7 PM on Tuesday January 28, 2025 in the parking lot of Country Grocer located in the Southgate Mall on 12th Street. The officers involved were not injured.
Police first observed the vehicle described as a white Ford pick up truck idling in the parking lot with a driver who appeared slumped over the steering wheel. Before officers could engage the individual to determine if he was impaired or in medical distress, the vehicle began to move. While attempting to drive out of the parking lot, the pick up pushed one police vehicle out of its path and struck a second police vehicle, causing significant damage to both. The suspect vehicle then drove out of the parking lot a high rate of speed. Before leaving the parking lot, the driver drove onto the pedestrian walkway in front of Country Grocer knocking over a number of displays containing potted plants. Due to the speed of the vehicle and driving evidence displayed, the officers did not follow the vehicle which was last seen driving southbound on the Trans Canada Highway.
One of the police vehicles struck was not drivable and had to be towed. The suspect driver was described as a bald Caucasian man wearing a blue jacket.
Investigators are asking any motorists who were in the parking lot or nearby between 6:45 PM and 7:30 PM on Tuesday January 28, 2025 to please review their dash cam video. If anyone has information or dash cam footage of the incident, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
