Charges laid in suspicious death

A man faces a murder charge after police responded to a suspicious death on Saturday morning.

On Saturday, September 28, 2024 just before 7:00 a.m., Lake Cowichan RCMP were called to a residence on Ditidaht First Nations. Upon arrival, police located a deceased man. Police support units were called to assist, including the Emergency Response Team (ERT) who took a man into custody without incident. Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) took conduct of the investigation.

On September 29, 2024, Derian Tate was charged with First-Degree Murder. He is next set to appear in court on October 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

The investigation remains ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.
