West Shore
2023-09-19 13:01 PDT
This week members from the West Shore RCMP Indigenous and Community Policing Unit’s hosted staff from Belmont Secondary School as part of a professional development day.
The professional development focused on reconciliation though sharing culture and education on the significance of National Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day which is held on September 30 every year.
The unit’s have hosted similar events in the community with other agencies by using the West Shore RCMP’s 35- foot pacific dancer canoe. Belmont Secondary staff enjoyed a day out on the water at Langford Lake with West Shore RCMP Community Policing officers, including Indigenous Policing Constable Cole Brewer, (member of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band), who shared his experience and cultural knowledge of the land and traditions of Indigenous peoples.
We felt honoured to be asked to participate and share teachings and knowledge that have been shared to us through our TL’Ches Spirit Canoe Program, said Cst Mark Hall, School Liaison Officer for Belmont Secondary. This is another example of the ways that our School Liaison Officer program connects with schools, we spend time together learning and sharing experiences.
