Update #52 on police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed

Lake Cowichan

2021-07-16 19:30 PDT

Police enforcement of the BC Supreme Court injunction order in the Fairy Creek Watershed area continued today, on July 16th 2021.

During the course of the day, individuals were again found to be locked in various devices. A total of 6 individuals were arrested; all 6 were breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court). They have since been processed and released in Port Renfrew.

Patrols were made throughout the area above where enforcement occurred, and members located and seized a variety of items stashed in the forest. These items included adult diapers, pre-made locking devices, gasoline and ropes.

The items seized today indicate that these individuals plan on remaining in the area and continuing to breach the BC Supreme Court injunction says Chief Superintendent John Brewer, Gold Commander of the RCMP Community-Industry Response Group. This is also not in keeping with the local First Nation wishes that these activities aren’t wanted on their traditional territory

Since enforcement began, the RCMP have now arrested 432 individuals; at least 27 of whom were previously arrested. Of the 432 total arrested, 324 were for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court), 84 were for obstruction, 10 were for mischief, 2 were for breaching their release conditions, 1 for counselling to resist arrest, 1 for resist arrest, 1 being intoxicated in a public place and 4 for assaulting a police officer.
