The Terrace RCMP responded to approximately 189 calls between August 23 and August 29, 2024. Below are a few highlights of those calls:

Dirt bike driver impaired

The driver of a dirt bike was observed driving at a high rate of speed and wearing no helmet. The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 24, 2024 on Hwy 16 in Thornhill. Police activated their emergency lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop while the driver looked back and waved. The driver did not pull over and disappeared into a wooded area. Approximately 10 minutes later, the officer saw the same dirt bike and driver emerge from a wooded area onto Paquette Ave. Once again, the driver tried to flee, attempting to pop a wheelie. He fell off his bike and tried to run instead, however the officer placed him under arrest. During the interaction, the driver was found to be impaired by alcohol as well as prohibited from driving. His bike was impounded. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to BC Prosecution Services to review for charge approval. (2024-7401)

Studded tires and impaired driving

On August 25, 2024, while on routine patrol, an officer observed a vehicle driving with studded tires and attempted a traffic stop in the area of Walsh Ave. The vehicle continued driving and eventually pulled into an apartment complex parking lot. The officer had used several different siren tones in attempt to get the driver’s attention and pulled into the parking lot as well. The driver exited the vehicle and began walking away, until the officer approached and advised her to have a seat in her vehicle. The woman was also exhibiting signs of impairment and the officer began an impaired investigation. The woman refused to provide a breath sample, which the officer explained would hold the same weight as providing a failed breath sample. She adamantly refused to provide a breath sample. The officer advised her that she was under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, her vehicle was impounded for 30 days and she was issued a notice of driving prohibition for 90 days as well as a violation ticket for studded tires. The woman gathered some belongings from her vehicle before departing into the apartment. (2024-7439)

The driver and lone occupant of a red sedan was reported to have crossed the centre line, colliding with a pick-up truck which had two occupants. The occupants of the truck were uninjured. Driver of the sedan was initially trapped in the vehicle and was receiving treatment from a Doctor who had come upon the scene as well as paramedics. Driver of the sedan is believed to be at fault. He was eventually extracted from the vehicle by Terrace Fire and transported to the local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. (2024-7484)

Truck takes down power lines

Terrace RCMP received a report of a single motor vehicle collision at approximately 12:40 pm on August 27, 2024. A large semi-truck with water tank had taken down power lines on Kalum Lake Road near Dover Road leaving live power lines wrapped around the truck. The driver was confirmed to be unharmed while officers blocked traffic to await additional resources. BC Hydro attended, de-powering the lines, and with assistance of Terrace Fire, were able to have the driver safely exit the vehicle. The investigation remains in the hands of CVSE. (2024-7488)
