Insp. Bruce comes to the community with 29 years of service with the RCMP, with Port Alberni being her eleventh post.

Her first eight years in Manitoba were characterized by rural, municipal and fly-in policing to the First Nation communities of Berens River, Poplar River and Bloodvein. Prior to her transfer to British Columbia in 2003, she was a member of Manitoba’s Tactical Troop and had been seconded to Selkirk General Investigations Section (GIS). Her first post in British Columbia was Burnaby where she served in both Watch GIS and Watch Commander roles, Behavioural Sciences Group (BSG) where she worked in the National Sex Offender Registry unit before taking on a Threat Specialist understudy role. After five years with BSG, she returned to frontline uniformed duties in Maple Ridge as Corporal Road Supervisor and Watch Commander. In 2013 she was promotied to Sergeant where she served in Richmond. In 2018, she took on a unique opportunity to assume a Detachment Command role at the Outer Gulf Islands, where policing is constantly reliant on the use of RCMP vessels. In 2021, she was promoted to Staff Sergeant at the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment (UFVRD) and returned to Burnaby when she was promoted to Inspector at the end of that year. After fulfilling the role of Line Officer overseeing the four very large frontline teams at Burnaby, she sought a return to Vancouver Island and pursued and assumed the role of Officer in Charge of the Port Alberni Detachment.

When I first arrived, I was immediately struck by the level of comradery and dedication to duty this detachment showcases. The sheer teamwork and communication that exists here to get a job done is humbling and impressive. I’m so honoured to have the opportunity to bring my experiences to this already talented group of employees, said Insp. Bruce.

The diversity of calls for service here are exciting and provide a great environment to learn and develop skills in a supportive atmosphere for our police officers and employees. As many live and work in this community they really connect with the people and it has both an urban and small-town feel providing a great quality of life, said Insp. Bruce.
