Racist vandalism discovered at Rossland French school

On Friday, October 20, 2023, at 8:57 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officers received a report that an unknown suspect(s) had vandalised the Ecole Des Sept-Sommets French Immersion School, in Rossland, BC. School officials discovered that someone had spray painted graphic pictures and a racist word on the outside wall of the gymnasium.

Temper, you’re driving

On October 20, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting routine patrol in a marked vehicle when she observed a 39-year-old Edmonton man and his vehicle allegedly travelling over 80 km/h in a 60 km/h posted speed zone on Highway 3B, in Trail, BC. The officer observed the driver allegedly cut off another motorist while conducting a lane change. The officer detained the man and his vehicle roadside. The officer noted that the man was very upset about being detained. He refused to produce his driver’s licence to the officer and rolled up his window. Additional officers attended the scene, including BC Highway Patrol, to aid the officer in maintaining public safety.

Due to the man’s odd behaviour, the officer believed the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle may be impaired by alcohol. A mandatory breath demand was read to the man. The man responded by plugging his ears and yelling over officer’s instructions. BC Highway Patrol RCMP officer assisted the investigating officer by stepping in and convincing the man to comply with the demand. The man did so after approximately 20 minutes of conversation and provided a sample of breath roadside that resulted in a pass.

The Trail RCMP officer issued the 39-year-old Edmonton man a $138 fine for Speed against highway sign contrary to Section 146(3) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Wanted Trail man flees from Trail RCMP

On Sunday, October 22, 2023, at 1:20 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting a routine patrol when he observed a wanted 44-year-old Trail man allegedly driving a grey Acura RDX in the 800 block of Victoria Street, in Trail, BC.

The officer was aware that the man had the following BC unendorsed warrants for his arrest:

• Transporting a prohibited firearm contrary to Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of firearm while unauthorized contrary to Section 91(2) of the Criminal Code
• Occupying a vehicle with a prohibited firearm contrary to Section 94(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a prohibited firearm contrary to Section 117.01 of the Criminal Code x 2
• Breach of a release order contrary to Section 145(a) of the Criminal Code

The officer attempted to detain the man and his vehicle roadside; however, he fled westbound on Victoria Street. The officer did not pursue due to the safety risk to the public. The officer continued routine patrols and discovered that the man had crashed his vehicle into a retaining wall on private property near the intersection of McBride Street and Highway 3B.

The man allegedly drove the away from the crash scene at low speed as his vehicle was heavily damaged. The officer followed the man from a safe distance and also at low speed. The officer stopped following the vehicle when the man suddenly began driving down the wrong side of the road.

The man still remains at large. Trail RCMP will forward a report with criminal charges against the man for review to Crown Counsel.

Trail man sustained non-fatal gunshot wound during home invasion

On Sunday, October 22, 2023, at 10:30 p.m. frontline Trail and Greater District and Castlegar RCMP officers responded to a report of a home invasion in the 400 block of Rossland Avenue, in Trail, BC. When officers arrived at the residence they discover a 55-year-old Trail man had sustained a non-life-threatening gun shot wound to his abdomen.

Officers applied first aid to the victim’s gunshot wound until BC EHS and Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue arrived on scene. BC EHS transported the victim to hospital for medical treatment. He is expected to recover from his injuries.
Police learnt through investigation that three suspects had broken through the front door of the residence, assaulted the man, and shot him in the abdomen before fleeing the scene. They were dressed in black and had their faces covered. They left the scene in a dark coloured sedan.

Trail and Greater District RCMP 3rd Quarter Statistics

Highlights from the third quarter:

• Overall calls for service were slightly down.
• Most crime stats remained relatively the same from the last quarter with no significant statistical changes.
• Theft from motor vehicles continue to drop to low of eight believed to be due to the public adopting a habit of locking their vehicles and securing their valuables.
• Drug investigation were down to four, and a new low in the decriminalization era.
