Update #84 on police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed

B.C., Lake Cowichan

2021-08-26 19:30 PDT

Police enforcement of the BC Supreme Court injunction order in the Fairy Creek Watershed area continued today, on August 26, 2021, with ongoing efforts to remove obstructions and individuals from locking devices or tree structures.

Early this morning, while patrolling the Hemmingsen Mainline Forest Service Road, officers located an All-terrain vehicle (ATV) which had crashed into a ditch and some bushes. One man was discovered suffering from significant and possibly life-threatening injuries, including a broken leg. Medical assistance was immediately provided and Emergency Health Services was called to transport him to hospital for further treatment.

The man indicated that he was traveling between protest camps to transport materials, and estimated that he was in the ditch for at least 15 hours before being found by police. Cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

During the course of the day, a total of 3 individuals were arrested. Two individuals were arrested for beaching the injunction (contempt of court) and were released after signing release conditions. One of the arrested was for obstruction and released without being processed.

Officers are continuing to monitor two other individuals in locking devices in a trench. Decision was made to leave them in place and efforts to remove them will continue tomorrow, as they are able to unlock themselves voluntarily.

Some contemnors were also assisted by RCMP with removing garbage from the Granite Mainline area today.

Since enforcement began, the RCMP have arrested 813 individuals; 72 of whom were previously arrested with a combined total of 168 times. Of the total arrested, 634 were for breaching the injunction (contempt of court), 150 were for obstruction, 13 were for mischief, 6 were for breaching their release conditions, 5 were for assaulting a police officer, 2 were for failing to comply with a court order, 1 for counselling to resist arrest, 1 for causing a disturbance, and 1 wanted Canada-wide on warrants issued by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
