File # 2024 7302 and 7699
On April 19 at approximately 2:40 p.m., West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit responded the scene of a collision involving a Dodge Ram pick up truck and cyclist in the parking lot of Canadian Tire at 855 Langford Parkway, Langford. The driver remained on scene and was displaying symptoms of alcohol impairment. The driver identified as a 34-year-old male provided samples of his breath which registered over the legal limit of alcohol allowed in the blood. The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The truck was impounded and the driver given a prohibition from driving. Police are also recommending impaired driving related charges under the Criminal Code against the driver.

Just a few days later, on April 25 at approximately 11:10 p.m., West Shore RCMP Frontline officers responded to another collision involving a vehicle and cyclist. A Hyundai Accent struck a cyclist near the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Goldstream Ave, Langford. Officers determine the low light conditions contributed to the driver not seeing the cyclist as the driver was making a left hand turn in the intersection while the cyclist was going straight through it. The cyclist suffered minor injuries. The driver was sober, very remorseful and cooperative with police, they were given a verbal warning and not issued a violation ticket.
If you have been consuming alcohol plan for a safe ride home. In general, we would like to remind drivers to please be mindful of cyclist who are sharing the roadway. Always check to make sure the bike lane is clear before making turns or going through an intersection, said Cpl. Nancy Saggar West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officers.
