Facebook Marketplace scam

On February 5, 2025, Powell River RCMP received a report of a Facebook Marketplace scam. A community member had posted books for sale on the site. Someone requested to purchase the books and sent an e-transfer for the amount. When the community member clicked to accept the funds, the link asked for further banking information. Fortunately, they were able to recognize it as a scam, and reported the information to their bank. As a result, they did not lose any money.

Powell River RCMP is reminding everyone to be vigilant when buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace and not to provide banking information through e-mail.
