A commercial vehicle collision near Spence's Bridge has resulted in one fatality. On October 5, 2023 at approximately 06:49 am, Ashcroft RCMP and BC Highway Patrol attended a report of a collision involving two tractor trailers on the Trans-Canada Highway # 1 near Spences Bridge, BC. Personnel from BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), BC Coroner’s Service, Fire Rescue, Canadian National (CN) Police Service and BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure were also in attendance.
The initial investigation has determined that the two vehicles collided head on while negotiating a curve. The northbound tractor trailer came to a rest down a steep embankment and on the CN track below. A fire ensued and the driver of the northbound tractor trailer, a lower mainland male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the southbound tractor trailer was un-injured and is cooperating with the investigation. The Trans Canada Highway # 1 and the CN railway were closed for investigation but have since re-opened.
BC Highway Patrol – Kamloops has conduct of the investigation which is still in the early stages. All avenues of investigation are being considered however impairment by drugs or alcohol have been ruled out as a factor in the crash. No further details are available at this time.
