Nanaimo

2025-03-06 08:52 PST

File # 2024-30850

An investigation into motorcycle riders operating in a dangerous manner has resulted in multiple charges against six individuals. The investigation commenced in the summer of 2024 after numerous calls from the general public about this practice. We received a number of reports from concerned citizens relating to motorcyclists involved in dangerous practices such as stunting, riding on sidewalks, not wearing helmets, etc. This behaviour jeopardized the safety of motoring public, pedestrians and the motorcyclists alike. As a result, an investigation was launched. Said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. (original news release).

By January 2025, two youth and four adult men, ranging in age from 16 to 29 were identified. These individuals were charged with numerous charges under the Motor Vehicle Act. The charges vary slightly from rider to rider but overall consist of the following: Drive without Due Care, Fail to Stop for red light, Ride Motorcycle without a helmet, operate a vehicle on a highway without property displaying or with missing plates, Operate a motorbike while not on a seat, Drive contrary to Restrictions, Failure to use foot pegs and Operate Motor bike not on seat.

We recognize that the overwhelming majority of motorcycle enthusiasts ride appropriately and in accordance with the rules of the road. However, there are those who were blatantly disregarding these rules and were putting others at risk. We hope these charges are a wake-up call for those involved and put a stop to this dangerous practice. Said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The investigation is continuing and other individuals may face charges.
