File # 2024-73

On Friday, January 5, 2024 at 7:35 am, the Sunshine Coast RCMP were dispatched to a report of a man expressing suicidal ideation and there was concern he was a danger to himself.

Officers responded to an apartment building at 5682 Wharf Avenue but the male barricaded himself inside his apartment, refused to cooperate, and made further threats to harm himself and police.

Due to the risk to officer safety and the mental state of the man, Crisis Negotiators were contacted and the Integrated Response Team sent two teams from the lower mainland to Sechelt.  The first team arrived by helicopter and the second arrived by ferry.  Access to Wharf Avenue was restricted and neighboring residents were evacuated.  After several hours, the man was safely removed from the residence and was taken to the hospital to be assessed.

"We are grateful for the assistance of our community partners including neighbours, the Sechelt Fire Department, and Emergency Health Services who stood by to ensure the safety of everyone involved", said Staff Sergeant Jenn Prunty.
