Extortion attempt

The Kitimat RCMP was made aware of a fraud attempt on December 26th. It was reported that the complainant had received an email stating that while they were visiting certain websites, a virus was installed and activated the devices camera. Furthermore, the complainant was told to forward a sum of bitcoin to avoid any of their information from being released. Luckily the complainant was able to identify this as a scam by looking online and seeing this was a phishing scam attempt. This was reported to the RCMP for information. This is a good reminder to be aware of current scams that are going around. You can educate yourself and others buy visiting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website. No business will ever ask you to pay with a gift card or bitcoin and never provide your personal information unless you are very certain of who you are communicating with. (2024-4641)

Erratic driving

A report of an erratic driver heading towards Kitimat along Highway 37 was received by the Kitimat RCMP on December 27th at 3:00 pm. A good description of the vehicle was provided, allowing the investigation officer to locate it as it arrived into Kitimat. A traffic stop was initiated and it was found that the driver was sober. The investigating officer had a discussion with the driver regarding safe winter driver and was allowed to proceed without charge. (2024-4651)

Wallet found / returned

On December 28th, a wallet that had been found in a parking lot along Alcan Way was turned into the Kitimat RCMP detachment. The investigating officer was able to find that the wallet owner was working at a local industrial construction site. The wallet was taken to the work camp and reunited with the owner. (2024-4658)

Check well being

At approximately 5:40 am on December 29th, the Kitimat RCMP received a report of a female that was sobbing behind a residence in the Nechako neighbourhood. A description was provided by the complainant and a further description was provided during neighbourhood enquires, however, the investigating officer was unable to locate anyone in distress or in need of assistance. Fireworks complaint

A report of fireworks going off in the Nechako neighbourhood at 7:00 pm on December 31st was received by the Kitimat RCMP. Unfortunately, the fireworks were scaring the caller’s dog and when they requested the people stop, the people setting of the fireworks declined. The District of Kitimat has specific bylaws regarding the purchase and usage of Fireworks. You can purchase fireworks only on the dates of Dec. 24 – Dec. 31, June 22 – July 1 and Oct. 24 – Oct. 31. You can discharge fireworks only on the dates of Dec. 31 – 2am Jan.1, July 1 and Oct. 31. Please visit the District of Kitimat Firework webpage. There is also other very important information regarding using fireworks safely. (2024-4676)

90-day IRP

On January 1st, while a Kitimat RCMP officer was on routine patrol in the downtown Kitimat area, the manner in which a vehicle was being driven caught the officer’s attention. A traffic stop was initiated, which resulted in an investigation into the impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver provided two samples of their breath into road side screening devices, which resulted in ‘FAIL’ reading. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. (2025-06)
