File # 2025-9790 / 2025-8263
The West Shore RCMP is warning the public of a scam involving the impersonation of a police officer.
On May 2, 2025, a West Shore resident received a phone call from a person claiming to be ‘Sgt. Thomas Scott from the RCMP’. The fraudster told the victim that their family member had been arrested and that the victim needed to transfer $2,000 to a third party for bail. After transferring the money, the victim tried calling their family member who confirmed that they had not been arrested and had no interaction with the police.
On May 23, another West Shore resident received a phone call from a person again claiming to be ‘Sgt. Thomas Scott from the RCMP’. The fraudster once again claimed they had arrested a member of the victim’s family, but this time they needed $1,500 in gift cards for bail. After purchasing the gift cards and providing the information to the fraudster, the victim became suspicious and called their family member. The victim’s family member had not been arrested and had no interaction with police.
We want the public to be aware of this fraudster who is pretending to be a member of the RCMP and targeting residents of the West Shore. Under no circumstances would police, whether that be RCMP or a municipal department, ever direct you to transfer money or make any kind of payment, said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.
