First responders attended to the intersection of Lougheed Highway and the Hayward Connector around 1 pm on May 29, after reports were received of a blue 1979 Corvette that had rolled over into the ditch. When police arrived, no driver was on scene, however he was located shortly afterwards at a nearby gas station. The driver stated that he mistakenly gave a little too much throttle while making the left turn, however he subsequently failed two roadside breath tests. The man from Maple Ridge was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, and his Corvette was impounded for 30 days.

On May 26, the owner of a green 2006 Ford F-350 reported that it had been stolen from a parking lot on Harbour Avenue that morning, between 10:45 am and 12:00 pm. Hours later, the owner of a black 2005 Ford F-350 reported that his truck – which had been parked in the same parking lot – had also been targeted by thieves sometime during the afternoon of May 25. The ignition and driver’s side door lock had been tampered with, but the truck had not actually been taken. The green F-350 was later located in Surrey on May 30.

Mission RCMP were requested by the Mission Fire Rescue Service to attend the Everglades Resort on Shook Road at 4:30 am on May 30. Four mobile homes there had been involved in a fire – two of which appeared to be completely destroyed. A 75-year-old resident was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was undetermined at the time, although there was nothing immediately suspicious.

A group of people shooting guns near Inch Creek off Hawkins Pickle Road caught the attention of others in the area, due to the shooting occurring in close proximity to a Forest Service Road and an ATV trail. Police attended and located five people there, with numerous firearms. Although all had firearms licenses, the area is closed to shooting, and all were issued tickets for discharging firearms in a no shooting area. Anyone wanting to do recreational shooting in the backcountry needs to ensure they are not doing so in a closed area. The Fraser Valley Regional District has a useful reference map on their website.

Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit conducted proactive enforcement in various areas over the past week. On May 26, an officer pulled over a white Honda Civic on Lougheed Highway near Silverdale, after it was observed travelling at 142 km/hr in the 80 km/hr zone. In addition to the excessive speed, the 22-year-old male driver could also only produce an out-of-country driver’s license, which was no longer valid due to the length of time he had been in Canada. The following day, in the same area, an officer stopped a vehicle for travelling at 136 km/hr in the 80 km/hr zone. At 9:30 am that morning, the same officer pulled over another car for speeding in the Silverdale area, and found the driver to be exhibiting signs of being impaired by liquor. The 44-year-old male from Mission failed two roadside screening tests, and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day impound. Around 5 pm on May 28, an officer near Deroche stopped a motorcycle that had been travelling at 152 km/hr in the 80 km/hr zone. Finally, on the afternoon of May 29, a General Duty officer pulled over a red Dodge Caliber, after it was seen swerving on Cedar Street, and had an obvious vehicle defect. The officer noted symptoms consistent with the driver being impaired by drugs, and one of Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services Officers, who is a certified Drug Recognition Expert, attended to conduct roadside testing. That officer confirmed there were numerous indications that the man was impaired by drugs, and he refused to complete a roadside screening test. As such, the man was issued a 90-day driving prohibition.

On the lighter side

On the evening of June 1, a motorist reported that a dark blue Chevrolet Silverado was on the highway heading toward the Mission Bridge. The truck was not reported to be speeding, swerving, or driving dangerously. But it did have a porta potty strapped to the back, and every time the driver hit his brakes, raw sewage splashed out onto the roadway. The witness followed – at a considerable distance – but lost sight of the truck after it turned off. Police did not locate the truck, but appreciated the witness reporting on such scentsitive" subject.
