BC Highway Patrol is making progress and asking for more video and witnesses in the investigation of a collision that killed a 61-year-old Nanoose Bay man on a wet and dark morning on Vancouver Island.

The collision happened on January 3, 2025, just after 7:00 a.m. when a southbound pickup truck struck the pedestrian as he was crossing Highway 19 at Northwest Bay Road, Nanoose Bay, BC.
BC Highway Patrol has brought in collision reconstruction and mechanical experts to go over every detail, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. This is a dangerous time of year for pedestrians. We are asking all drivers to slow down and be extra alert, and all pedestrians to wear high-visibility clothing and protect themselves.

This is a dangerous time of year for pedestrians. We are asking all drivers to slow down and be extra alert, and all pedestrians to wear high-visibility clothing and protect themselves.
The driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with police. There was no immediate indication of impairment or overt criminality. Multiple witnesses to the collision also stopped and did what they could for the pedestrian and to assist police.

A thorough investigation will take time, and no further updates will be provided until the investigation is complete.
