Coquitlam RCMP officers, dubbed the ‘Copsicles,’ will once again be Freezin’ for a Reason at the Polar Plunge to support Special Olympics BC.

On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the Coquitlam RCMP and Ridge Meadows RCMP ‘Copsicles’ will be running into icy cold water to help create awareness and raise funds for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics emphasizes celebrating personal achievements and supporting athletes in gaining confidence, skills, and friendships.

I am fortunate enough to have supported Special Olympics BC even before my policing career, said Inspector Aaron Lloyd. To be able to continue to support this cause as a Mountie is a tremendous honour.

Coquitlam RCMP ‘Copsicles’ will also be joined by local Special Olympics athletes at the event.

Coquitlam athlete Ariel Taylor is a member of Special Olympics Team Canada set to compete in snowshoeing at the next Special Olympics World Winter Games in Italy from March 8 to 15, 2025. She says supporting Special Olympics makes a difference because it has helped her grow as an athlete and a person.

Competing alongside my friends and fellow athletes makes me feel happy and proud. I love to have fun and laugh with my friends. Special Olympics is a big part of my life, says Ariel. Before I became a Special Olympics athlete, I knew very little about sports. The Special Olympics has given me many new opportunities. I have tried new sports, won medals, met new people, and made lasting friendships.

Coquitlam athlete Amy Nelson competed in soccer at the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin.

What makes me smile on the field is being with my team, playing soccer, and just having a great time, Amy says. Being in Special Olympics has gained me so many friendships. It helps me grow as a person, not just only in Special Olympics, but outside of Special Olympics too."
