There is a whole lot that RCMP Corporal Kristy Powell understands about being part of a team. There was her volleyball team, competitive gymnastics team, competitive cheer team and her BC Lions Cheer team.
Her intention, after high school was to teach. She started with a diploma in Sports Sciences and then carried on to the University of British Columbia where she studied and received her Bachelor Degree in Human Kinetics.
So, how did this 16-year-veteran find her way to team RCMP? Her dad. I had about one year left in my degree so I was living at home. I was having breakfast with my parents and my dad was looking through the newspaper and he said, ‘hey, the Vancouver Police are hiring. You should go check it out,’ she recalls.

Sitting through that hour and a half presentation, I thought, this is what I want to do, she remembers. She sent her application to multiple agencies and the first place to hire her was the Vancouver Police Department as a jail guard. It was an awesome start to my career, Cpl. Powell says.

I had stayed out of trouble my whole life and at the jail I met these amazing people and this cast of characters off the street. I enjoyed every minute of it and I was there for about two-and-a-half years until I went to depot in 2008, she says.

Cpl. Powell completed her training at depot and her first posting was in Mission, not too far from where she grew up in Coquitlam. My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in, the house my parents built together in 1976, she says.

As a Mission RCMP rookie, she was one of two members chosen as part of the ceremonial troop for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics where she was honoured to carry the Canadian flag in the opening ceremonies. The second highlight in my career was carrying the Grey Cup into the stadium in 2024 at the CFL event in Vancouver.

An interesting fact: Cpl. Powell was honoured to be part of the Cheer Team when the BC Lions won the 88th Grey Cup in 2000 against the Montreal Alouettes in Calgary.
Fittingly, her entire career has been spent with her frontline team. I’ve only worked the frontline because I love it so much, says the frontline Ridge Meadows police officer.

I like trying to help people make their lives better. It’s not so much about arresting the bad guys, says Cpl. Powell.
