Smithers RCMP share current crime trends with reminders for businesses

B.C., Smithers

2025-06-23 15:19 PDT

Smithers RCMP are sharing recent crime trends, including a rise in business break and enters, a decline in shoplifting, and an increase in drug trafficking enforcement.

The drop in shoplifting is the result of focused enforcement efforts on a small group of repeat offenders. Meanwhile, the increase in break and enters reflects a shift towards crime occurring outside of regular business hours. Several businesses have been affected in recent months, with suspects gaining entry by forcing doors or breaking windows. These incidents typically occur overnight, and police are working to identify those responsible.

While shoplifting has dropped following enforcement focused on repeat offenders, we are now seeing more after-hours break and enters, said Sgt. Ryan Law, Acting Detachment Commander of the Smithers RCMP. We are working hard to identify those responsible and support business owners in reducing their risk, added Sgt. Law.

These crimes have a significant impact on our small business community. Smithers RCMP does offer a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) service to local businesses. A trained officer is available to assess properties and provide practical recommendations to help prevent crime.

Business owners are encouraged to:

In addition to property crime trends, police have observed an increase in drug trafficking enforcement. Officers continue to conduct enforcement aimed at reducing the harms illegal substances have on the community. These efforts have resulted in an increase in drug trafficking investigations.

Enforcement, prevention and community collaboration all play a critical role in public safety. We want to thank those in the community who have already supported police efforts through information sharing, cooperation and partnership.

We encourage all businesses to review their security measures and take advantage of available supports, including CPTED assessments.
