The Smithers RCMP is urging parents and guardians to speak with their children about off-road vehicle (ORV) safety following a rise in complaints about unsafe quad use by youth in the Telkwa area.
Community members have observed young riders operating without helmets and on roadways where they are prohibited. In several instances, riders appeared to be underage, unlicensed, and without any safety equipment.
We are being told by community members that youth are riding dangerously, and we’re deeply concerned that we may end up responding to a preventable tragedy, said Acting Sergeant Jim Preston, Smithers RCMP. These machines are powerful, and without the proper training, gear, or supervision, the risks are very real added Acting Sgt. Preston.

RCMP members will be increasing patrols in and around Telkwa. While education remains the priority, officers will issue tickets for infractions under the Off-Road Vehicle Act and Motor Vehicle Act when necessary.
As summer approaches, the RCMP is also reminding off-road vehicle users of their responsibilities under British Columbia’s Wildfire Act. All off-road vehicles must have an approved spark arrestor installed when operating on forested land during wildfire season. A spark arrestor is a small screen or device fitted into the exhaust system that prevents sparks from exiting the tailpipe, helping reduce the risk of wildfires.
RCMP encourage residents to report unsafe ORV use and help spread awareness about the rules. Parents are reminded that off-road vehicles are not toys and carry serious risk when used improperly.
Together, we can help ensure that young people stay safe and that no family experiences a loss that could have been prevented, said Acing Sgt. Jim Preston
