Police are investigating a sudden death after remains located at the scene of a fire have been confirmed human.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, around 10 p.m., Kamloops Fire Rescue extinguished a fire at what was believed to be a transient camp on the bank of the South Thompson River. On Tuesday Jan. 23, 2024, around 1:40 p.m., a worker attended the scene for clean up, discovered the remains amongst the debris, and police were called.
Today, Wednesday Jan. 24, the BC Coroners Service attended the scene and confirmed the remains to be human, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

A police presence remains in the area. The ongoing investigation is being conducted in partnership with KFR, and with support from the Forensic Identification Services Unit, an RCMP fire investigator, frontline officers, the Serious Crime Unit, and General Investigations Support Team, as they work to identify the deceased and establish what occurred.
The BC Coroners Service is conducting a concurrent investigation.
