Comox Valley
2024-11-08 09:19 PST
The Comox Valley RCMP is issuing a warning to residents about a concerning scam involving remote desktop access that has targeted several victims here locally.
How the Scam Works: Scammers are contacting potential victims under false pretenses such as bank security issues, software fixes, investment opportunities or anything else they come up with. They often pose as representatives from well-known companies like Microsoft, Amazon, or popular tech support services. They persuade victims to download free remote desktop software, such as AnyDesk, and ask for their Remote Desktop ID, allowing complete access to the victim’s computer. Once access is granted, scammers often direct victims to log into their bank or investment accounts. This gives them an opportunity to withdraw/transfer money, collect sensitive data, steal personal information, and install malware.
