Nearly six years after a hit and run that left two police officers with life altering injuries, a 35-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison.
On March 4, 2019, just before noon, an RCMP officer and Abbotsford Police officer on duty with the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service were seriously injured in a hit and run that occurred in the 5000-block of North Fraser Way in South Burnaby.

Burnaby RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team assumed primary conduct of the investigation.
On May 26, 2022, charges were approved against Jason Kirupakaran.

On November 7, 2024, Jason Kirupakaran was sentenced to four years in relation to the criminal negligence counts, and one year consecutive in relation to the failing to remain at the scene of an accident counts, for a global sentence of five years in prison. The court also imposed a seven- year driving prohibition and a DNA order.
